Deceased Members of the Society for the Year 2017:

Peter T. Flawnof Austin, on May 7, 2017, Member since 1966. The University of Texas at Austin provided news about his passing. The Austin Statesman's article and the Houston Chronicle's article give additional information.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017, in the LBJ Auditorium on 2313 Red River Street in Austin. The auditorium is accessible through the LBJ Library.

John Clifton Caldwellof Albany, on April 11, 2017, Member since 1969, President of the Society in 1988. Obiturary.

J. Sam Moore Jr.of El Paso, on March 14, 2017, Member since 1993, President of the Society in 2003. Obiturary.
The April 2017 Humanities Texas e-newsletter carried an article about him that included remembrances from some of his many friends.

Vester T. Hughesof Dallas, on January 29, 2017, Member since 1993, Texas Lawyer Article in Texas LawyerObiturary.
Services were held on Feb. 6, at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas.

Charles A. LeMaistre, M.D., of San Antonio, on January 28, 2017, President of the Society in 1981, Member since 1962, M.D. Anderson prepared a release about him. The Houston Chronicle also carried a news release. Services were held on Feb. 17th at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Houston. A later service was held at Tarry House in Austin.

Harry J. Middletonof Austin, on January 20, 2017, Member since 1979. The New York Times carried an article about him. The Washington Post also featured an article about his life. The Austin American Statesman also ran an article on him. A memorial to honor Mr. Middleton was held Feb. 1, 2017, at the LBJ Presidential Library. 

Terese (Terry) Hersheyof Houston, on January 19, 2017, Member since 1992, The Houston Chronicle carried an article about her death. Obituary.

I extend my thanks to all who helped make the The 2015 Annual Meeting such a success. We were glad to welcome so many members and their guests to Tyler and to the meeting on the topic of "Healthcare Delivery: A New Reality." I am grateful to the moderators, speakers, and panelists and most particulary to my fellow members who who participated in those roles. 

I extend all best wishes to the 2015 President, Larry Faulkner, and to all members of the Philosophical Society of Texas.

The 2015 Annual Meeting will be held Feb. 6-8, 2015, in Tyler, on the topic of "Healthcare Delivery: A New Reality." All members, their guests, and the surviving spouses of deceased members are invited to attend.

Information about the 2015 meeting in Tyler has been posted on the Annual Program page. The Accommodations page has information for making reservations at the Holiday Inn on South Broadway. We will have transport from the Hotel to all meeting venues.

Daily flights are available through United Airlines and American Airlines.For those who arrive by plane, the Holiday Inn offers a complimentary shuttle between the Tyler Airport and the Hotel.

The Board of Directors, the Tyler members, and I look forward to welcoming you to Tyler.

The Purposes of the Philosophical Society of Texas

  • To perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men who in 1837 founded the original "Philosophical Society of Texas," and of those who, in later years, have by their research and writings furthered the cause for which the Society was organized.";

  • To establish research into literary, scientific, and philosophical studies in Texas and elsewhere;

  • To foster the preservation of literary, scientific, and philosophical documents and materials;

  • To establish and maintain such publications as are necessary to carry out the Purposes of the corporation;

  • To have and to hold by purchase, grant, gift, or otherwise, real estate identified with the history and development of literature, science,and philosophy, and personal property consisting of books, manuscripts, and other materials relating to these fields of learning. and of those who, in later years, have by their research and writings furthered the cause for which the Society was organized;

The Membership of the Philosophical Society

Membership is by invitation only and is limited to two hundred persons of distinction whose life and character have furthered the purposes for which the Society was established.

Bylaws of the Philosophical Society of Texas

Only persons who reside within, were born within, or at some time have resided within the geographical boundaries of the late Republic of Texas, are eligible for membership. Election occurs in the summer and is determined by a majority of the active members who have voted. All members may nominate and second persons for membership.
